A decade or so before Joe Montana and Bill Walsh, the 49ers came very close to greatness. The quarterback for those 49er teams was John Brodie. In many ways his style of play was very similar to that of Montana and Walsh. While almost all of the other NFL teams were running the ball, Brodie and the 9ers were throwing it. Brodie has not yet been elected to the HOF, despite many superb years and some outstanding comebacks. Besides the comeback in the game shown here, one of those comebacks was the final game of the 1972 season. The 49ers needed a victory to make the playoffs. Brodie did not start the game and by the 4th quarter his team trailed the Vikings 17 6 with about 8 and a half minutes remaining. Coach Nolan called Brodie off the bench and he led his team to two touchdowns. The last in the waning moments of the contest. The 9ers won the game 20 17 and were off to the 72 playoffs. Brodie it could be said was a combination of Montana and Walsh since he called his own plays. The West Coast offense could be said to have originated with Brodie and the 9ers. The play calling was very much similar to what was later to be the known as the West Coast. |
