He is the younger son of veteran actor Sivakumar and brother of leading actor Surya Sivakumar. His sister in law is the popular former actress Jyothika. He rose to fame after he debuted in Paruthiveeran, for which he received a Filmfare Best Tamil Male Debut Award and Filmfare Best Actor Award. Karthi graduated from the Prestigious St. Bedes School in Chennai after which he went on to complete his undergrad from the Crescent Engineering College. He earned his M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Binghamton University, State University of New York, USA. He has also done a couple of basic courses in film making. After returning to India, he joined as an assistant to Mani Rathnam in directing Aayitha Ezhuthu and Yuva. Mani Rathnam had wanted him to act in Aayitha Ezhuthu but Karthi rejected the offer, thus the role was given to Siddarth Narayan. His dream was to become a director but when Ameer, the well acclaimed director of Raam, approached him to play the hero in his new film Paruthiveeran, Karthi accepted the offer. He was cast opposite actress Priyamani in Paruthiveeran. ABOUT THE FILM PAIYA: Paiyya is Indian Tamil film that stars Karthi Sivakumar and Tamanna Bhatia. Directed by Linguswamy, who earlier directed hits like Run (2002), Sandakozhi (2005) and Bheema (2008) In July 2008, actress Nayantara was signed for Paiyya for a record salary of 1 crore rupees. However she walked out of the film in December 2008, due to the directors reduction of salary due to series of flops recently. She was subsequently replaced by Tamanna Bhatia who was signed for 80 lakhs, despite early indications that Trisha Krishnan would bag the role. The film was initially titled Kuthirai, however was later renamed as Paiyya.
