The Italian film Marriage Italian Style (Matrimonio Allitaliana) was released in December, 1964 and was an instant hit with critics and public alike. Based on the Italian play Filumena Marturano, the movie became a perfect vehicle for the great acting team of Loren Mastroinanni. Set in her native Naples, and directed by her favorite Director, Vittorio De Sica, costarring Marcello Mastroianni, Sophia gave a tour de force performance in the plum role of Filumena. The role is time spanning, requiring Sophia to play a woman from age 17 progressing to one in her 50s, and she did so formidably; going from comedy to drama effortlessly. The story is told via flashbacks, beginning and ending in the present. The film has been one of my enduring favorites and with this photo parade video set to the movies theme song, I wanted to pay honor and tribute to the great Sophia Loren. Sophia went on to get her second Oscar nomination for this film, the film was also nominated for Best Foreign Film. Unfortunately, She lost the Oscar that year to Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins. However she went on to get many International honors, she won a Golden Globe award, an Italian David Di Donatello Award (Italys Oscar), The Moscow Film Festival Award, and a German Bambi Award. |
