| Description: |
Mathematical Physicist and author Roger Penrose discusses consciousness and the relationship between mathematics and physics that inspires his insights into the workings of the human mind (a Godelian influenced perspective). His view is that there is an essentially non algorithmic element to human thought and human consciousness due to quantum effects in the brain, which are the source of our feelings of self awareness and our consciousness. His two bestselling works of popular science, The Emperors New Mind and Shadows of the Mind, explain his theories in detail.
Sir Penrose is an Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford and an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Royal Society Royal Medal winner, and winner of the LMS Naylor Prize. In addition to the recent honor of knighthood, Professor Penrose was awarded the prestigious Wolf Prize for Physics in 1988, which he shared with Stephen Hawking. |
