Nations that supply nuclear material and technology have approved a contentious US nuclear trade plan with India.
After three days of talks in Vienna, the 45 nation Nuclear Suppliers Group agreed to lift a 34 year old embargo on India, which has not signed the nuclear non proliferation treaty.
Austria, Ireland and New Zealand had opposed the waiver fearing it could set a dangerous precedent. The Austrian government says it lifted its objections after India pledged not to touch off a new nuclear arms race or share nuclear technology with other nations.
The US is commending the deals approval.
John Rood, Acting US Undersecretary of State said This is a historic moment for the Nuclear Suppliers Group, for India, for US India relations, indeed for Indias relations with the rest of the world. This is an important moment also for the strengthening of the nuclear non proliferation regime.
India also says the agreement is forward looking and momentous.
Pranab Mukherjee, Minister of Indian External Affairs Ministry said The decision will open a new chapter in Indias cooperation with other countries in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. We look forward to working with our international partners in realizing the full potential of mutually beneficial cooperation that this decision entails.
The International Atomic Energy Agency approved the US India accord last month. It will now be submitted to the US Congress before its final ratification. |
