Their names were: Chief Warrant Officer Donovan Briley Staff Sergeant Daniel Busch Specialist James Cavaco Staff Sergeant William Cleveland Staff Sergeant Thomas Field Sergeant First Class Earl Fillmore Chief Warrant Officer Raymond Frank Master Sergeant Gary Gordon Sergeant Cornell Houston Sergeant Casey Joyce Private First Class Richard Kowalewski Private First Class James Martin Master Sergeant Tim Griz Martin Sergeant Dominick Pilla Sergeant First Class Matt Rierson Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart Corporal Jamie Smith Chief Warrant Officer Cliff Elvis Wolcott 1 American soldier succumbed to his wounds received in battle shortly after the incident. Sergeant Lorenzo Ruiz Two Delta Operators posthumously received the United States Medal of Honor for making the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the life of pilot Michael Durant. Their sacrifice was not in vain. Michael Durant survived the ordeal, and was released after 11 days in captivity. Exactly how many Somalis were killed in the battle, no one can say for sure. But estimates have ranged anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000. All gave some, some gave all.
